[Press Statement] Coalition Responds to New York State Senate Vote on DREAM Act

 New York State Senate Shuts Door on Immigrant Youth;
Coalition Responds With Disappointment, Pledges to Keep Fighting

(New York, NY) On Monday evening, the dreams of thousands of undocumented New York youth were shattered on the New York State Senate floor.  In a rushed vote widely perceived as a cynical political move, the New York State DREAM Act came up two votes short with 30 Senators in support and 29 against; every Republican present voted against the measure.
The New York Immigration Coalition, alongside thousands of undocumented New York youth, their families, and dozens of advocacy groups, faith leaders, and labor unions, have pressured the New York Legislature to pass the New York State DREAM Act since the federal DREAM Act failed in Congress in 2010. The NYS DREAM Act would allow undocumented immigrant students to apply for state tuition assistance, expand access to the State’s 529 College Savings Program, and create a private scholarship fund available to undocumented students.

The following is a statement from Steven Choi, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition:
“Those who voted no on the New York State DREAM Act have shut the door on opportunity for our State’s youth and have squandered an important investment in young people who can boost New York’s economy, support our communities, and serve as our State’s future leaders.  However, we continue to hold out hope that Governor Cuomo and Senate Co-Leaders Jeffrey Klein and Dean Skelos will repair the damage done to immigrant students by putting the New York State DREAM Act in the final budget.  In the coming weeks, we will ramp up the pressure and demand action.  Let us be clear: We will not stand idly by while our elected officials in Albany play political football with the lives of immigrant youth.”
