Coalition Responds to President Obama’s Speech in El Paso,Texas

NYIC to President: Yes You Can Stop the Deportations

The President’s speech today was, unfortunately, much ado about nothing; his expressions of support for immigration reform sound like empty promises to immigrant communities since they’re not backed up by action. True, he can’t single-handedly reform the system; Congress has to do its part; and shame on the likes of Lamar Smith and Peter King and John McCain for their demagoguery, dishonesty, and opportunism.

What the President can do is direct his Administration to stop separating families. Given the current reality, President Obama, as chief executive, has the power, with the stroke of a pen, to enact policies and set priorities that will undo some of the damage his administration’s enforcement-only approach has wrought. He can provide relief to DREAMers. He can stop turning local law enforcement officers into immigration agents. And he can put politics aside and show leadership to change a system he himself acknowledges is broken.

The New York Immigration Coalition is an umbrella policy and advocacy organization for nearly 200 groups in New York State that work with immigrants and refugees. The NYIC aims to achieve a fairer and more just society that values the contributions of immigrants, fosters their leadership, and provides a vehicle for collective action for New York’s diverse immigrant communities. It has launched the “With the Stroke of a Pen” campaign and also participates in the national “Change Takes Courage” campaign to urge the President to take executive action to begin to repair our immigration system.
