Coalition Applauds Passage of "Enhanced Safety Net Hospital" Bill to Strengthen Health Care for Low-income Consumers

(New York, NY) Last week, the New York State Senate and Assembly passed important legislation (A9476A/S6948A) to improve health equity and make it easier for public hospitals to fulfill their mission of caring for all patients, regardless of ability to pay in a nearly unanimous decision. The "Enhanced Safety Net Hospital" bill ensures that hospitals that care for low-income and uninsured patients, sometimes described as “safety-net” hospitals, are recognized as such and receive increased reimbursement rates to support critically needed health care services for low-income and uninsured patients, including immigrants.

The following is a statement from Steven Choi, executive director at the New York Immigration Coalition:

“The New York Immigration Coalition commends the State Senate and Assembly for passing legislation to better help these hospitals and providers that care for large proportions of uninsured and Medicaid patients. New York's immigrant communities are unfairly excluded from many health insurance programs because of their immigration status, and thus rely on these safety-net providers for the care they need and deserve. This legislation helps keep these safety-net providers sustainable and financially viable, so they can provide this care for immigrants left behind by federal and state programs.

"We strongly urge Governor Cuomo to confirm the broad support for this legislation by signing it into law.”
