Immigration Coalition Applauds Decision by Illinois Governor to End Participation in Secure Communities

Calls on Governor Cuomo to Join Illinois in Rejecting the Program

Following is a statement from Ms. Chung-Wha Hong, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition:

“Late Wednesday, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn made the laudable decision to terminate the state’s participation in the so-called “Secure Communities” program. The program, ostensibly aimed at prioritizing individuals convicted of serious crimes that pose a threat to community safety, has come under fire for undermining local community policing efforts and creating a climate of fear among hardworking immigrant communities. Illinois, as the first state to terminate its memorandum of agreement with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), sets an important precedent for states around the country.

"We hope that Governor Cuomo will show the same commitment to promoting our public safety and terminate New York’s participation in the program. The state of New York has long been a leader in providing a welcoming environment for immigrants. With 24 counties in New York State participating in Secure Communities, New York is betraying its heritage. We look forward to working with Governor Cuomo to rebuild trust with immigrant communities and set New York on the right path.”
