On the Introduction of Mandatory E-Verify in the House

"Today, House Judiciary Committee Chair Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX) introduced a bill to mandate that all of the nation’s employers screen their employees through the Department of Homeland Security’s E-Verify system to determine if they are authorized to work. In introducing this bill, Lamar Smith has ignored the effect the program will have on our nation’s businesses. This is what we can expect: $2.6 billion in additional costs to small businesses; millions of workers forced to confirm they are authorized to work or risk losing their jobs; 770,000 dismissed workers; and all this resulting from a reliance on a database that is prone to mismatches and inaccuracies.

"So we have yet another costly, ineffectual enforcement mechanism—a red-tape trap that squanders resources, does nothing to bring us to a better functioning immigration system that serves the public interest, and disrupts our economy when we can least afford it. Congress must reject his divisive bill and focus on real solutions."
