The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) is an umbrella policy and advocacy organization for nearly 200 groups in New York State. We envision a New York state that is stronger because all people are welcome, treated fairly, and given the chance to pursue their dreams. Our mission is to unite immigrants, members, & allies so all New Yorkers can thrive. We represent the collective interests of New York's diverse immigrant communities and organizations and devise solutions to advance them; advocate for laws, policies, and programs that lead to justice and opportunity for all immigrant groups; and build the power of immigrants and the organizations that serve them to ensure their sustainability, to improve people's lives, and to strengthen our state.

Position Overview
The Vice President of Development & Communications will lead the NYIC’s Development team and our fundraising efforts, maintaining our strong momentum with foundation and government funding while also developing systems and programs to grow individual and corporate donations through board recruitment, events, and other initiatives. The VP will oversee the NYIC’s Communications team and media relations and serve as steward of the organization’s brand; depending on interests and expertise the VP may also directly lead communications work. The VP will work closely with the NYIC’s senior leadership team and will play a key leadership role within the organization.

Reports to: President & CEO

Key Responsibilities
Development & Fundraising

  • Leads Development team in writing and editing of proposals, reports and other materials
  • Develops and implements strategies for recruiting, cultivating, and stewarding individual donors, including strategies to engage and retain new donors and increase major gifts
  • Develops and maintain relationships with corporations and develops and implements strategies to increase corporate giving
  • Recruits and stewards individuals to join the NYIC’s Board of Directors
  • Serves as the key steward of the NYIC’s brand and leads marketing efforts

Communications

  • Oversees communications staff and consultant(s) in development and implementation of communications strategies for ongoing priorities

Organization

  • Works with President & CEO and NYIC senior leadership team to provide direction on key organizational activities and adherence to strategic plan priorities
  • Ensures integration of Development and Communications teams with other NYIC teams
  • Leads marketing and communications pushes for key organizational initiatives, including NYIC’s annual Gala and other events
  • Serves as spokesperson for NYIC when necessary

Relationship Management

  • Works with VPs of Advocacy and Policy to ensure strong relationships with NYIC members, elected officials, and stakeholders for development and communications purposes

Management

  • Supervises Development and Communications teams – staff, fellows, consultants, and volunteers to successfully meet NYIC’s goals
  • Manages performance, offers coaching, guides professional development, and provides key feedback

Qualities Sought:

  • At least 5-7 years of relevant senior management and executive experience, including demonstrated leadership of teams and ability to successfully execute key objectives
  • Strong track record of success in leading fundraising efforts from a broad base of funders, including individuals, foundations, and events
  • Proven ability to lead communications efforts and execute advocacy-related, profile-raising and development-related communications
  • Excellent communication, public speaking, and writing skills
  • Knowledge of immigration issues at a national, state and local level is an advantage
  • Fluency in another language highly encouraged
  • Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment and juggle multiple tasks
