Jose Antonio Vargas Takes on Stephen Colbert
One of our heroes, Jose Antonio Vargas, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who outed himself in a recent New York Times Magazine article as undocumented, made an appearance on the Colbert Report last night.

Colbert, in full character, says to Vargas: “In June, you wrote an essay for the Times Magazine called, ‘My Life as an Undocumented Immigrant’… You’re an illegal alien!”
To which Vargas, responds: “No, I’m an undocumented immigrant… this is actually an important point. I don’t want a 12 year old sitting in a middle school somewhere in America thinking that he or she is ’illegal.’”
Vargas holds his own and, on one of the most-watched satirical late night tv programs in America, brings the public into an important conversation about changing the way we speak about immigration .
Vargas also told Colbert that he had already generated almost 90,000 online signatures for his petition from people across the nation who pledge to “Define American” and to have a new conversation about immigration. You can sign Vargas’ petition HERE.
And while you’re at it, please sign on to our Pen Campaign, because as Jose Antonio Vargas helps to shift the terms of the debate around immigration, the NYIC is calling for concrete policy changes, starting with an end to the administration’s record-breaking enforcement policy.
