"IIRIRA & AEDPA Twenty Years Later: Legal Representation Challenges in New York and Beyond" a huge success!

On Tuesday, October 25, the NYIC presented "IIRIRA & AEDPA Twenty Years Later: Legal Representation Challenges in New York and Beyond" with The New York Bar Association Special Committee on Immigrant Representation. The conference, held at New York Law School, was a tremendous success!

Our dynamic and experienced panelists explored the many ways in which the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIIRIRA) and the Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 (AEDPA) led to the criminalization of the U.S immigration system. Panelists included NY elected officials, lawyers working on the ground in detention centers, esteemed journalists, policy makers with decades of experience, and more! The five panels addressed the criminalization of immigration, changes to detention procedures, new bars and obstacles to immigration, the jurisdiction stripping of federal court, and the road ahead. The NYIC would like to thank the New York State Bar Association and New York Law School for putting together this sucessful event for policy makers and experts to think through the next steps in our quest for fair and just immigration reform. Check out our event photos below and for a more in-depth take on the impact of IIRIRA, read our Huffington Post blog post!
