Fundamental Flaws Loom Large while Secure Communities Task Force focuses on Traffic Violators

Last week, more than 200 law enforcement officials, civil rights organizations, and faith leaders joined together in calling for an immediate halt to DHS’s “Secure” Communities program. The controversial program runs the fingerprints of anyone arrested through a DHS database to determine whether they are deportable, essentially turning local law enforcement officers into ICE agents.

First half of CA DREAM Act Passes State Senate

Last Thursday, the California legislature passed the first part of the California Dream Act, AB130, which would allow undocumented immigrant youth who qualify for in-state tuition to also be eligible for non-state funded scholarships such as institutional financial aid or private scholarships.

One of our heroes, Jose Antonio Vargas, the Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist who outed himself in a recent New York Times Magazine article as undocumented, made an appearance on the Colbert Report last night.

NY State Dropping the Ball on Health Exchanges

The New York State Senate recently failed to pass a health insurance exchange bill (“Dropping the Ball on Health Exchanges,” NY Times, July 11, 2011) that creates an exchange where small businesses and individuals in New York purchase quality, affordable, private insurance. Unlike the current marketplace, the exchange is consumer- friendly. Insurance companies are required to publicize information about their practices, including claims denials and costs to the consumer for out-of-network coverage.

Lamar Smith's Got It Wrong

No disrespect intended, but what universe does Congressman Lamar Smith inhabit? In a letter to the editor of the New York Times, Cong. Smith asserts, “Over the last year, the Obama administration has ignored the will of Congress and the American people by using executive branch authority to allow illegal immigrants to remain living and working in the United States.”

Coalition Hits the Streets

Last Thursday, in the heat of a New York City summer’s day, staff and volunteers from the New York Immigration Coalition, its member organizations, and other partners, armed with clipboards and pens, stopped to talk to passers-by and get signatures for the Coalition’s ‘With the Stroke of a Pen’ campaign.

Join Our Conversation: Welcome to the NYIC’s blog!

Today, we are extremely excited to share with you the New York Immigration Coalition’s brand new blog, a place we hope will be a hub for conversations and news around immigrant issues in New York and beyond! The NYIC has been sparking conversations—and making sure immigrant voices are included in public policy debates--for over two decades.

It has been a month of exciting wins for immigrants in New York City!

Last week, the New York Immigration Coalition was joined by New York City Council’s Immigration Chair Carlos Menchaca to announce a landmark $10.3 million dollars to expand several key programs for immigrant communities.

This week, Mayor Bill de Blasio signed into law ground-breaking new City...

The time to apply for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is now. When President Obama began the DACA program two years ago, long delays by the Department of Homeland Security in deciding applications led many people who were eligible not to apply. It was not unusual for the first batch of DACA-filers to wait half-a-year to find out if they were approved.

DACA renewals began last month. Want to know when you have to file to renew your Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival (DACA) work permit? The National Immigration Law Center has a new tool that calculates when to renew for you.

The Department of Homeland Security says that you can file your renewal no more than 150 days before your permit expires. So the best time to apply...

The release of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) renewal form at the beginning of June 2014 answered one of the pressing questions for DACA applicants who had not completed high school. That question was “How much progress towards getting my diploma or its equivalent must I make to renew?”

The initial DACA application required immigrants to prove that...

The difficulties in passing immigration reform this year have led to a broad disillusionment among many DREAMers with the prospect of changing our laws to protect undocumented immigrants. It has even led some to ask whether DREAMers should seek protections for themselves if the broader masses of immigrants are not given legal status.

An example of one young immigrant who has...

The new Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) renewal form has finally been released. We have been waiting a couple of months for this, but it has arrived before most DACA recipients need to renew.

According to the instructions issued by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service, if you have already been granted DACA you should file your renewal 120 days...

The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program just celebrated its second birthday and I think it is time to take a look back at the program. In some ways it has been a life-saver for immigrants brought here before their 16th birthdays by their parents and in some ways it has been disappointing.

At the time DACA began it was estimated that 1.3 million undocumented...
