Coalition Expresses Outrage as DHS Plans for Surge of Immigration Raids Focused on Mothers and Children

(New York, NY) The New York Immigration Coalition expressed outrage today as news spread that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is preparing for a new round of nationwide immigration raids this May and June. Reuters has reported that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has told field offices nationwide to launch a 30-day "surge" of arrests focused on mothers and children with deportation orders.

The following is a statement from Steven Choi, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition:

“The renewed threat of raids sanctioned by the White House and Federal immigration authorities is a travesty - nothing more than a cheap political stunt. In January, when 121 individuals were detained in different parts of the country, our communities lived in terror. This tactic of keeping immigrant communities in constant fear of deportation is immoral and unjust. It does nothing to resolve the broader issues of our broken immigration system.

“We are shocked that the Obama administration continues to use these misguided tactics, especially as it has become clear that many of those deported back to Central America have been killed or become victims of the same violence they sought to escape. In what has already been a vitriolic election year, sending the message that immigrant communities are dispensable is abhorrent, dangerous and has greatly inflamed fears in all immigrant communities - and only highlights the egregious over-enforcement and raids that are already targeting our communities.

"We demand that the Obama Administration reverse course immediately and cease this unacceptable practice, and instead rightfully grant temporary protected status to Central American families fleeing horrific violence. The Administration must set a standard that the nation’s highest office will not sacrifice immigrants for political purposes, but instead utilize alternatives to deportation and over-enforcement that do not rip apart families and send them back to murder and mayhem.

"Until then, the NYIC will do everything in its power to ensure our immigrant communities can fight back against unjust deportations, access the legal services and resources they need, and claim the relief and justice they deserve.

The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC)  is an umbrella policy and advocacy organization for nearly 200 groups in New York State that work with immigrants and refugees. The NYIC aims to achieve a fairer and more just society that values the contributions of immigrants and extends opportunity to all by promoting immigrants’ full civic participation, fostering their leadership, and providing a unified voice and a vehicle for collective action for New York’s diverse immigrant communities.
