New York State DREAM Act Passes New York State Assembly for Fourth Time, Coalition Calls on Senate to Follow Suite

(New York, NY) On late Monday, the New York State DREAM Act passed through the New York State Assembly for the fourth time in four years. The New York State DREAM Act would allow undocumented college students who meet certain criteria to be eligible for state financial aid. If enacted, New York would join California, Texas, New Mexico and Minnesota as the fifth state to offer access to financial support from public and private sources.

The following statement is from Steven Choi, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition:

“This is the fourth year in a row that the New York State DREAM Act has passed the Assembly floor, demonstrating once again the overwhelming support for New York DREAMers. And yet still, we see little follow through from the Governor and the State Senate. This must change immediately.

“Just last month, we saw the New York State Board of Regents take a momentous decision to allow DREAMers to apply for professional licenses and practice law, nursing, teaching, and more. If the Regents can follow through with a common-sense decision, so can the New York State Senate for tens of thousands of young people who deserve an affordable education.

"Let’s make sure that this time, the Assembly’s passage counts by ensuring Governor Cuomo and the State Senate finally make the New York State DREAM Act becomes a reality."
