Coalition Disappointed at U.S Supreme Court Refusal to Rehear Case on DACA/DAPA

The New York Immigration Coalition joined advocates across the country in expressing frustration at the U.S Supreme Court’s announcement that it will not rehear the case involving President Obama’s executive actions on immigration that would grant administrative relief to approximately 5 million undocumented immigrants. Following the Supreme Court’s initial decision this June that upheld a lower court’s injunction on the President’s executive actions, this refusal is yet another blow to millions of immigrants. The Supreme Court is hindering individuals from accessing needed immigration relief, which would provide protection from deportation and the ability to work legally to support their families.

In a statement, Steven Choi, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition said,

“We are deeply disappointed by the Supreme Court’s refusal to rehear the case of DACA+ and DAPA, as this will continue the unproductive and unfair cycle of leaving five million people at risk of deportation and being torn apart from their families. The Supreme Court has abdicated their responsibilities to a gridlocked and paralyzed political system that continues to come up short in providing real solutions. This is not justice, and our communities are tired of having their lives kept in limbo because our nation's leaders lack the political will to create meaningful change.

“However, our work to achieve justice for immigrant communities is unrelenting. We will call on our next President and Congress to stop using immigration as a wedge issue, and finally pass just and fair comprehensive immigration reform. Simultaneously, we will continue doing what we do best: support our immigrant communities across New York State through tangible policy changes - from adult literacy to health care, immigration legal services to language access - that will bring real, tangible improvements in the daily lives of the four million immigrants that call New York State home.”
