A dozen adventurous New Yorkers set off today on a five-day road trip across New York State to call for immediate action on immigration reform. The caravan, billed as the “Road Trip for Our Future,” will stop in ten cities and towns throughout the state, where it will join up with local groups for rallies and other actions.

The New York City Department of Education and P.S. 200 in Bensonhurst, Brooklyn, are planning to shut down that school’s Russian dual-language program – the only such program in the city – due to funding cuts. We are urging the DOE and the school’s principal to reconsider this decision and preserve the program.

Bay Ridge tenants and community organizations, in alliance with a broad citywide coalition, rallied outside the district office of Senator Martin Golden, calling on him to co-sponsor the repeal of vacancy decontrol. Thirty percent of residents of Senate District 22 depend on rent regulation to protect against excessive rent increases and baseless evictions. Vacancy decontrol puts these rent regulated units in jeopardy. Senator Golden, despite his professed support of tenant causes, has not co-sponsored S2237-A, legislation that would close this loophole.

 By rejecting the formula for selecting troubled areas in section 4, the Court effectively invalidates Section 5, the provision responsible for monitoring and enforcing access to the ballot

(New York, NY) Today, by a vote of 5-4, the Supreme Court rejected Section 4 of the seminal Voting Rights Act (VRA) of 1965, effectively ending more than 40 years of government oversight that protected minorities’ rights and ensured equal access to the ballot.
