Coalition Extremely Disappointed by Announcement that U.S will Resume Deportations of Haitians

Enforcement Heavy Response Ignores Plight of Migrants, Directly Contradicts Commitments to Protect Migrants on Week of UN Summit

Today's announcement by Secretary of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson that the U.S government will fully resume deportations of Haitians and apply the same harsh policies as to other groups at the Southern Border is devastating news for Haitian communities. It is also yet another example of knee jerk reactions by our government administration based out of fear. Our government continues to ignore not just the plight of displaced migrants but the significant value they bring to the US when allowed to resettle here.

In a statement, Steven Choi, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition said:

"We are extremely disheartened by today's announcement and stand in solidarity with our Haitian communities, and all those seeking protection from harm in the United States. As we get ready to mark the 20th anniversary of one of the most draconian immigration reform laws ever passed, and as we continue to fight against policies that tear families apart and help refugees in harm's way, we urge the Department of Homeland Security to recognize the tremendous economic and social benefits a compassionate policy approach would bring.

“We are especially disappointed that this announcement comes at the end of a week where the U.S sought to position itself as a global leader in efforts to assist the millions of displaced persons around the globe today. During Monday's first ever United Nations summit on Refugees and Migrants, and again on Tuesday during President Obama’s own convening on the issue, he asserted the US' commitment to protecting the world's most vulnerable populations who are fleeing civil strife and natural disasters. Yet his administration's actions directly contradict this rhetoric.”
