On the Justice Department’s Lawsuit Against Arizona’s SB1070 Immigration Law

New York City. Following is a statement from Ms. Chung-Wha Hong, executive director of the New York Immigration Coalition:

The New York Immigration Coalition applauds the action taken by the Department of Justice to challenge Arizona law SB1070, which usurps federal authority, amounts to state-sanctioned racial and ethnic profiling, compromises the ability of the police to protect public safety, and does nothing, in the end, to solve the problem of our broken immigration system.

Let’s hope this federal challenge deters other states and localities from pandering to the public’s frustration with illegal immigration by attempting to pass similarly counterproductive measures. And let’s hope that our leaders in Washington—on Capitol Hill and in the White House—do what needs to be done to resolve the tensions created by our broken immigration system, by finally enacting comprehensive and common-sense immigration reform.
