Coalition Applauds Release of Recommendations from Mayor’s Immigrant Health Task Force

(New York, NY) The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) applauds the release of the recommendations from the Mayor’s Immigrant Health Task Force to improve the availability of information and the quality of health services for New York City immigrant populations.
Especially important among the plans announced in the Mayor’s Report are the following:
  • A Direct Access program designed to improve access and coordination for immigrants excluded from federal coverage
  • Recommendations on better health information dissemination to immigrant communities
  • Enhancements to improve language access and cultural competence in health care settings.
In a statement, Steven Choi, executive director of the New York Immigratio Coalition said, “Health care access and coverage are essential to immigrant families’ integration and economic stability. We applaud the efforts of Mayor de Blasio’s administration to close gaps and improve the availability of services and information. Although important services are available now, the Mayor’s Taskforce plan provides an important roadmap to further closing gaps to health care, improving coordination and to making New York City’s health care system truly immigrant-friendly.”
The NYIC collaborated with the Undocumented Patients Project of The Hastings Center to release the April 2015 report: “Undocumented Immigrants and Access to Health Care in New York City: Identifying Fair, Effective, and Sustainable Local Policy Solutions” which highlights proven or promising local solutions to closing these gaps in other cities, counties, and states for undocumented and uninsured communities. Hastings Center research scholars Nancy Berlinger and Michael K. Gusmano, co-directors of the Undocumented Patients Project, served with the NYIC on the Mayor’s Taskforce on Immigrant Health Access. Nancy Berlinger notes, “The Mayor’s Report contains innovative solutions to the challenges imposed on cities by federal restrictions on coverage for certain groups of immigrants. This represents an important step for addressing costly and inefficient gaps in health care access, and an example for other cities throughout the nation.”
